Newbie: Looking for Phone Interface Schematics---Others

Hi,
I'm new to this newsgroup and am in the process of building a
telephone line monitor. I need to detect RING, then isolate it
through an opto-isolator to my Stamp. Where could I find
suggested interface schematics for this. Also, where are other
non-Parallax source for other interfaces?
Thanks in Advance....

phototransistor makes a good ring indicator. The ring signal is about a 90
volt / 20 Hz signal sent up the phone line. This makes the neon bulb flash,
which is picked up by the photocell or phototransistor. The photocell or
phototransistor is tied to a Stamp pin.
Just be sure to monitor your pin long enough to avoid false rings from line
spikes.
You could also find a schematic of a modem or cheaply phone and look to see
how they do it.

will give you a _legal_ physical connection to the phone line (DAA - data
access arrangement). Keep in mind that the telephone companies don't like us
connecting non-legal devices, so be careful if you hack your own.

Yah, I know that they (phone co.) doesn't like it. That's why I
am looking for a pretty "clean" interface. My project?
Detecting Distinctive Ring, then switching the line to either (1)
a phone, or (2) my computer for a software-fax program. This
means that I have to interface directly with the phone line vs.
through a modem control line.
I am forced into this because Microsoft, in their infinite
wisdom, has dropped Distinctive Ring support in Windows 2000. It
was support in Win 95/98---and the software that I was using
(HotFax) recognized that and only picked up the line on the
alternative ring.

Probably available at www.nutsvolts.com . A recommended book in this
article is: Telephone Repair Illustrated, Stephen J. Bigelow, TAB Books
(1993).
