Cordless phones as a Stamp input

With cordless phones going for under $10 (900mhz
barebones $9.99 after rebate)I was wonder if these
could be adapted to directly connect (no phone line
connection) to the Stamp and serve as a remote input
to the Stamp i.e. enter a digit or series of digits
as an input to the Stamp.I don't think it would be
as easy as connecting the TIP and RING lines to the
Stamp but what would be necessary to interface it
to the Stamp? Does the phone need a dial tone
to activivate circuits before sending out digits?
I would switch the phone to pulse mode and use the COUNT
intruction to count the number of pulse vs using DTMF
tones which would require a DTMF decoder and take up
four (or more) Stamp pins. I have no particular
application in mind right now except for maybe a 'long'
distance X10 controller as it seems to have a range
of about 200'. Any input would be appreciated as to
whether this could be done easily and how.

Thanks,
Bob Oldershaw
