Hi all,
I'd like to toss this out for consideration.

I enjoy teaching with micros because they can be great tools to reinforce basic
electronic principles, signal conditioning, drive-systems, process control, and
also programming.

At Southern Illinois University, we are using micros more and more throughout
the curriculum as they relate to various aspects of electronics for the
Electronic Systems Technologies program in which I teach. The BASICStamp is
great tool for starting off, the Javelin might be a great platform for student's
who are now required to take a C++ course. Beyond that, our actual 300 level
micro-controller course is focused on higher level architecture (bus's,
multiplexing, etc) and programming in assembler for 8051 based, Pics, etc.

Most of our degree paths (programs of study) in EST have a direct line into
industry, such as networking, communications, bio-med, industrial. I would like
some feedback here, or in a private E-mail, is how hire-able students who
specialize in micro-controllers would be? I know there are a lot of nitch
markets, but can anyone really point out places that are looking for
embedded-system techs? And yes, I need to read more trade journals and start
looking at the ads :)

Any input would be most appreciated on how you view the technology workforce for
students with this background.

Thanks much,
Martin Hebel
