Serial to USB cable

Does anyone know if it is possible to make a cable that is serial on
one end and USB on the other. I would like to try and make one if
possible so I can free up one of my serial ports for another device
and use this cable to work with my BasicStamp programing if possible.
I have figured out the RD (receive data) and TD (transmit data)
hookups, but where do I connect the other 2 wires of the USB connector
to the serial connector. Any help would be helpful.

You can find pre-made USB to serial adapters at B&B Electronics
here: http://www.bb-elec.com/convert_serial_port/usb.asp these come
with driver software on CD-ROM.
If you prefer the roll-you-own version, here's an excellent book by
Jans Axelson on USB http://www.lvr.com/usbc.htm that will help
you design your own cable & understand the USB port.

I've had pretty good luck with it.

These guys make a USB to serial converter. I use it on My Toshiba as they
figured that we don't need serial ports any more. The Keyspan unit works with
Stamps too.
No Need to reinvent the wheel.

Thank you for the information on "Serial to USB cables", I found a
few of them in a price range I like, and also a book that I will
purchase soon.
Thank You !!

problems with all of them except for the Belkin brand device. Some would
receive the debug data fine but would not program a Stamp!
I'm new to Stamps. Does anyone out there know if the mini-sumo bot will
work with any serial to USB cable? Or do I need to purchase a specific one?
I have an old cable I used for my PDA once, but it doesn't appear to be
working with the bot.
Thanks,
Pam

they typically do not support all the 'handshaking'
signals (RTS/CTS, DTR/DCD) needed by the Stamp.
The Bafo parts do, as do the KeySpan 19W units.
The FTDI units also work well.
Stay away from the PDA adapter units.
Personally I'm very unhappy with the Belkin
units, but your experience may vary.
