Rookie Question..... PLEASE help me out.

I am working with the BS2, and need to receive a few ASCII characters
from a program running on the PC. The program will be sending
an 'S', 'F1','F2','F3','F4', or 'F5' to the Stamp (via the RS-232
connection), and I would just like to know the format of the
variable that will be receiving this information.
Is it 'Dim'd as a byte? What type?
Sorry for the VERY basic question, but we all gotta start somewhere!!
