wireless applications with the Basic Stamp

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has a need for a wireless device to
send/recieve data with other Stamps, Palm Pilot, etc. I'm developing
a small IR transciever that takes serial data from the BS2 and
modulates/demodualtes the data either another device or a Palm Pilot,
etc. My personal application is to recieve data collected from
sensors on a model rocket.

Would anyone else find this device useful? The preliminary size is
0.85" by 1.25" and can operate from 9600bps to 115.2kbps.

Thanks,
--Jeff

    Jeff,
Can you make that capable with WinCE ie, HP Jornada Pocket PC?

Yes, based on the preliminary information I've gathered, this will
also work with WinCE and other Pocket PCs. You could also use it with
a laptop computer, wireless phone, pager, etc. Basically, it will
work with any device that is IrDA compliant. I would like to find
people willing to test it with devices such as Palm Pilots, WinCE
    computers, etc.

Could I end to end these devices and have a serial link without a Palm or CE
    machine?

    Hi Rob,

Yes you could do this. You could have 2 BS2's talk to each other, a
PC and a BS2, etc. This is just another form of serial communication,
only without the wires. The maximum distance for transmission will
most likely be approximately 1m (with provision for up to 3m
    transmission).

I'm really aiming for a $30-$35 range for an individual board and a
$45-$50 range for a pair. It wouldn't be any more expensive than that
and could most probably be less.

This would be ideal for a project I am working on at the moment.
Serial data transfer from Stamp to Stamp. Sounds like a better option
    for me than RF.

    Cheers

    Hi Rob,

Based on what I've read thus far, IrDA does not support full-duplex
communication. Here is a quote from a document found at the IrDA
    website (www.irda.org):

IrDA protocols send packets one way at a time. If a device tried to
send data and listen for data at the same time, it would "hear"
itself and not the device it wants to communicate with. The way IrDA
devices achieve two way communications is to take turns, also known
as "turning the link around". This happens at least every 500
milliseconds, and can be made more frequent as necessary. This
latency makes it impossible to perfectly emulate the wired COMM
environment - very timing sensitive operations will be disrupted.
Fortunately, many communication tasks are not so sensitive, and these
    can use IrCOMM.

    I hope this helps....

Hi, Jeff. Yes, we might need such a device at the Science Museum. We have a
project that demonstrates microgravity: an box containing an experiment and a
wireless camera "free falls"; the video is shown on a PC monitor. The box has
to be totally wireless. The camera part is worked out...we are using an X-10
camera and an ATI card. We would like to use a STAMP in the box talking with a
STAMP on the floor to turn the power to the camera off when it's not needed & on
when it is, communicate information from sensors in the box, and other tasks.
The current plan is to use 2 Parallax transceivers with the stamps. G-forces
are a concern for me, but the project manager & designer have ignored me: the
box will fall 40 feet into a 1-foot thick cushion of foam rubber. So it's
likely we'll be redesigning after all this stuff gets smashed to smithereens.
The STAMP on the floor communicates serially with the PC using Visual Basic.
