I'm really testing my memory this time..
Was it here that someone posted a link some weeks (or months) ago for a
sports timer that a runner or swimmer could wear on their head.....????
I lost the link and have searched for too long, otherwise I wouldn't ask...

    Hello Chris,

If you a going to produce something like this I would be very interested.

I have been searching for a "sailing watch."

There are a few available (search under "Ultimate Sailing Watch" for examples.
Sail boat races start with a
countdown from 10, 5, 3, 2 or 1 minute. It is hard to find a timer that counts
down instead of up! There are only
about 7 wrist watches that will do it, but there is precious little time at the
start of a race to stop and
consult a wrist watch. If you are at the helm of the boat, your wrist is really
    moving, especially in the seconds
before the start! Accordingly, all the racing watches have beepers.

But a beep, in isolation, doesn't really convey any quantitative information
about how much time you have left
    before the starting gun.

Your idea of a "heads up" display, maybe with the velco hat brim mount, would
    really be a neat solution.

It might be better to make a "smart" beeper. Say two long beeps at the 2 minute
mark. One long beep at the 1 minute mark. 5 short beeps at 50 seconds, 4 short
beeps for 40 seconds, etc. The a single short beep for each second of the last
10 seconds. Would be much cheaper, more durable and easier to use.

    Hi Hank,

I am engulfed in the display technology at the moment. There's a big gap
between experimental stuff and micro color video, neither of which is
    suitable for this.

What's bugging me is that I had a hard drive crash a few weeks ago, and I
was keeping an email trail of negotiations with a company that has the basic
timer and waterproof eyeglass display product completed. This was of course
was in a folder that was not regularly backed-up. Add to the 'of-courses'
the fact that I seem to have found a bad sector in my own human hard drive,
and can't remember either the person or the company name. This a first for
me, and it's upsetting. Add that to the attendant at the 10 minute
oil-change place yesterday that seriously asked if I was old enough for the
senior's discount. My wife is still laughing - especially since she still
looks to be somewhere between 25 & 29. (Hey, she works at it, & I dont.)

I do remember their web-site showing bicyclists and swimmers wearing the
sleek unit with their goggles. I just have no memory of any kind to help me
get back to them, not even the URL.
I had originally posted on this subject here because I recalled receiving
the contact info from this list.

I did some prelims on using a similar technique for in-water sports aps.
Some object to the visual display, citing it as a potentially dangerous
distraction, as the state of the art has been similarly plagued in the auto
    industry as well.

I'll keep plugging at this one, and will likewise keep posting...

    Yes, good idea.

I guess one question would be, how would the BS2 do as a timer? It would require
a crystal controlled oscillator circuit as as first step, I guess, and some
    divide-by chips?

A RTC (real time clock) chip could be used, many are available. Most only count
up (I'm sure some offer countdown) but no big deal, just reset to 00:00:00 and
then use the time from there to decide when to beep.

    I've done this with BS2's amd DS1302's (although the DS1302's have a
tendency to drive me crazy at times.....This is probably one of the lowest
power solutions for use with a stamp - by turning the 1302 on and off as
    needed.

    But, yes, Michael, there's a boilerplate design that uses a 4060 & a 32k
crystal with a stamp. Works just fine, although it uses a bit of power.
