Modem & Voice chip recommendations

Hello,
I have a project where I would like to call a phone number, such as a pager
and put in a say 3 digit code for display on the pager. I then want to
call the main number back, enter the code and have a small prerecorded
message played back. The three digit code would be a randomized security
code. I know that I could do this with a PC, but I do not want to leave
the PC running all of the time.
I know that there are single chip modems out there. Can anyone give me
some places where I can find these? I have a few names or versions
thereof floating around in my head, but cannot really remember the correct
names for the companies. I did a search on Google, but it did not come up
with anything of the sorts I was looking for, and I checked out a lot of
web sites!
Also, can someone recommend some programmable voice chips? I know that I
have seen these as well. What I am trying to do is have the project say
"Temperature is 32 degrees."
Thanks,
Brian G.

Brian -
You may want to check here for single-chip
modems: http://www.cermetek.com/02/prod.html
I believe that these are they type that Parallax offers. As far as the
voice chip is concerned, Quadravox has a number of offerings:

www.radi.com (some products have caller-id besides modem features)
www.cermetek.com
Both sell nice single chip/single module type modems. If this is a
one-off project and you're cost sensitive you might also consider an
inexpensive external modem that you could attach via the serial port.
