I've never used enough 1302s to see the problem -- and several of the ones
that I own have the crystals carefully soldered to them. Keeps the little
buggars from getting lost.
Since I tend to use the BS2p, the PCF8583 is my prefered RTC. It uses a
crystal too ... so maybe it's no better a choice.

good. I get my 1302's and the correct crystals from RTN Australia. In the
application notes from dallas there is some information regarding screening
out noise that may be worth looking at, mainly by running a ring around the
crystal and the 2 relevant pins, and draining it to 0 volts, plus keeping
the crystal as close as possible to the 1302 pins.
