7805 regulator replacement

I'm about to go to the annual Miami Hamfest where I re-stock my electronic
small parts bins. Of course I can't find the information now but what I
remember reading is there is a TO220 Pin4Pin replacement for the 7805 linear
voltage regulator that uses switching technology. Does anyone happen to
have the part number handy?

Anyone have any BX-24 code for the DS1620 TEMP IC?

I just received my pre-release of the BX-35 and I'm IMPRESSED!
128kb EEPROM for program storage.
32k RAM for data & variable storage.
a real hardware RTC
64 multiplexed PINS
8 built-in TEMP sensors
16 A/D D/A converters
12 onboard LED's in 3groups, RGB so you can have WHITE lite
(the default powerup program "DISCO" is way cool)
And it's only 24PINs

7805 drop ins, but you are not likely to find them surplused and they
are pretty high. The exact version you want depends on the input voltage
range, output current, etc..
Be warned: although the pinout of these regulators is the same as a
7805, they are physically larger so you need some clearance. On the
other hand, you don't need a heat sink, so that helps some.
PT5100 is one of the 5V parts. Another is 78HT205HC. Digikey carries
these so do a search on voltage regulator. Then filter on Switching, 5V,
and TI/Plug in Power Solutions. That will get you to 29 items. You can
ask for the catalog page on specific items in PDF so you can check out
the dimensions.
I have a few of these around. I hadn't thought of it before, but these
would work great with our PS-I board
(http://www.al-williams.com/awce/ps1.htm which normally takes a 7805 --
sure would add to the price though :-) ).

The Texas Instruments part you may be looking for is a PT5101A (formally
PowerTrends). PDF datasheet link: http://www-s.ti.com/sc/ds/pt5101.pdf
Digi-Key carries the part.
