Is there a way to tell the Stamp 1 Editor which parallel port to use
on a PC with more than one?

If I remember correctly, put /1 /2 or /3 after the command line.

Those switches work for the Stamp 2 on a serial port, but it doesn't
seem to work (i.e., hardware not found) for a Stamp 1 on a parallel
    port.

What type of parallel port do I need (e.g., bidirectional, EPP,
    ECP, ...)

Oops, make that "the editor doesn't even load" instead of "hardware
not found." The only command line switches seem to be /h for help
    and /m for monochrome mode.

Sorry! That was from memory and apparently faulty memory. Looks like it
must detect the Stamp, which means you probably have some other problem.
Could it be power or a faulty cable?

It's not a cable or power problem. I can program the BS1 when
connected to LPT1, but not LPT2. Windows Device Manager says
everything is OK (i.e., no conflicts), but I notice LPT2 is at memory
adress 3BC instead of the standard 278 (3BC is standard for LPT3).
LPT1 is at the standard 378. Could it be the editor only looks at
these two standard addresses? I'll try changing LPT2's address and
    try again.

I'm going to make a guess that the editor looks for the LPT addresses in
the BIOS memory area. Start a DOS window and type debug. Then enter:

    D 40:8
That should show you the LPT addresses (two bytes per address). If LPT2
is not correct, that might explain it.

Oddly, mine shows 4 LPT ports even though I only have 1 LPT port, so my
guess is Win XP is fibbing to DOS to catch network printers :-)

I'm not sure how you knew to use 40:8 for the dump range in debug,
but here is the first line of the results...

    -d 40:8
    0040:0000 78 03 78 02 00 00 80 9F

So, it appears that LPT1 and LPT2 are at the correct address and
there are only two LPTs, right?

Just to verify again LPT2 is functioning I connected my printer to
LPT2 and the BS1 to LPT1. The printer works, but the Stamp editor
gave me a "EEPROM verify failed" error. If I power off the printer I
do not get the error. I can then power the printer back on. So it
seems the editor quasi-detects a BS1 as the printer. But, this isn't
consistent (i.e., I cannot duplicate this everytime). By the way, I'm
running the Stamp editor from a DOS window. It didn't seem to matter
    if I re-booted to a DOS prompt.

I'm going to just manually re-connect the BS1 to LPT1 whenever I need
to re-program it. I've only got one BS1 left and it's not worth my
time to troubleshoot this anymore. I'll do my microcontroller
prototyping on the BS2 and production with PIC.

Do you have LPT1 an LPT2 set for the same IRQ by any chance?

No, they are not, I don't think... The second parallel port card has
a jumper for IRQ 5 or 7 (it is an 8-bit ISA). It is set to IRQ 5.
Device Manager shows LPT1 as using IRQ 7, but LPT2 did not show any
IRQ being used which may explain the intermittent problems. IRQ 5 is
shown as being used by another adapter card in my system, but no
conflicts are being reported. I don't have any free IRQs at the
moment, but when time permits I'll remove the card using IRQ 5 and
test again. Thanks for all your suggestions Al.
