finest point focusing

How would I focus a 5 mW laser to the finest possible point? I can come up with
some hardware to move the laser
relative to a lens, in tiny increments, using a micrometer drive translation
stage and a stepper governed by the
Stamp.
If you visualize the laser beam as an hourglass shape, you can see the
possibility of scanning back and forth
through the narrowest section of the beam, hunting for the smallest possible
cross sectional area.
I am stuck at the problem of devising a sensor. How do you tell the Stamp when
and where the finest possible
point of light has been achieved? Or at least, where it might be found?
