Speed Indicator ideas needed.

I would like to learn how to use the Stamp technology, so my starter
project is to build a simple speed indicator for a canoe....
Any ideas on what to use for a transducer? A simple paddle wheel
with an embedded magnet would be good, but have no idea where to buy
one...
Any thoughts?

useful applications. I highly doubt you'll be able to find one that's
affordable AND designed to do exactly what you want. All of the flow meters
that I've seen have been awful pricey from the hobbyist viewpoint.
If you are taking a propeller-like substance and adding magnets, add two so
you don't throw the balance way off. I'd think that a paddle-wheel type deal
would be best. The larger the diameter, the better, too. (Of course,
assuming that obtrusiveness is not a factor.)

You might get in touch with Michael Gianturco. He's built a speed
indicator for an R/C sailboat and posted a message about it on Dec 27.

"....A small boat is to be towed behind the racer. It has a freely
spinning propellor, and on the propellor shaft, spinning along with
the prop, is a magnet. A bipolar Hall detector/Schmitt trigger chip
(Allegro 3132) senses the passage of the North and South poles.
The BS2 counts the pulses for about a quarter of a second, then
multiplies the count by a scaling factor....

Their impeller is designed for use on sailboards.

How about just a simple lever on a pot. 0 speed the lever is straight
down. As you move forward the lever moves back.

it could be made waterproof, yet still be precise under low flow
conditions. The canoe is a Hawaiian 6 man outrigger, so we run in
salt water (big waves and rough water with occassional capsizes...)
and need something corrision resistant and waterproof.
