I have a pattern of black and white circles on a large panels that I
want to read into a BS2. What is the best way to read the
difference between dark and bright areas on a wooden panel? I am
thinking optically, but wonder if someone has experience with that
or there is something commercial that can do the job.

the black and white circles or the presence and absence of either black or
white. Are you going to scan the field of interest or control what you are
looking at by moving the "X & Y" co-ordinates of a field?

on it, with about 10 holes in each direction. The user gets to
place white pegs into these holes. I want to make 10 sensors spaced
at the same distance as that between the holes and all of them
mounted on an arm on top of the disk. This way when the disk is
turned, the sensor will read the combination of hole-peg (or black-
white)in each row. I was thinking of doing this magnetically using
magnet for the pegs but that gets rather costly. I really prefer an
optical solution.
I am using this for a children exhibit at a children museum.

out Banner Engineering (if you got $ to burn).
Perhaps you can use some type of metal peg that can be detected by a
proximity switch located beneath the peg's hole. I know
automationdirect.com sells proximity switches. Prices start at about
$15. Maybe even less $ if you check website for the latest pricing.
Sizes range from 5-30mm.
