quoting text

Hi all -
I've noticed that a number of people on the list always include the full
copy of the Original Message they are replying to. I'd like to ask
everyone not to do that.
For those of us who, like me, get the "digest" version of the list, i.e.
all the messages in one long e-mail, this is really a pain. It means we
read a four-line message, and then have to scroll through screens and
screens of quoted text we've already just read, over and over again, in
order to find the next message. It means that the vast majority of text
on the list is redundant and irrelevant. If you could cut out all or
most of the "Original Message" when you reply, that would be great, and
would help make reading the list more enjoyable. The rule of thumb on
the net for many years has been "never include more quoted text than
original". If you write four lines, don't include more than four lines
of quoted text - just enough to remind us which message you're replying to.
Thanks - Jeff Mann

You have elected to take the digest, therefore you have elected to take the
"pain." your definition. Maybe your suggestion should be directed to the
people who edit the digest.
My personal preference is to see each message and reply just the way it is
currently handled. It saves me search time.

I guess this is a drawback to the use of digest mode.

Hmm, I see. That never really occurred to me. I guess I'm used to the
old days - I started on Usenet and mailing lists back in 1987, when the
bandwidth of extra text was actually a big consideration, what with
1200bps modems being the norm.
Perhaps I'll switch over to non-digest mode then.

the message generated by Yachoo! and their mail editor. This includes the
header / subject stuff that gets inserted when they reply and the ads and
nonsense Yachoo! tacks on at the end of every message. Not to mention the
cutesy sigs and stuff people put at the end of their messages.

email program (called Message Rules in MS Outlook) so all of the list
messages go into a single folder, and you won't have this issue.

What needs to happen no matter what, is folks need to trim out the Smile in
the message generated by Yachoo! and their mail editor. This includes the
header / subject stuff that gets inserted when they reply and the ads and
nonsense Yachoo! tacks on at the end of every message. Not to mention the
cutesy sigs and stuff people put at the end of their messages.
