What it .Bmp

I am working On a graphic display. The maker of the controller allows you to
download black and white pics in .Bmp format. I just want to know What is .Bmp
format and how doses it work?

    bmp are bitmap files. it is the most common file in windows computers. goto
    c:\windows\ and look for .bmp files.

    I know that you thay are in my computer. ( I put some of them
    there ). And I know they are bitmap files, but what is inside? how
    can my computer send them to my display and it looks the same? does
    it put 1's and 0's from left to right like a tv or does it do it in
    packs (8 bit, 16 bit ). That is what I want to know.

    A bitmap file was / is? the native graphics file format for Windows. The
    icons, wallpaper, startup (splash) screen and shutdown screen are all in
    this format up to Windows 95 -- Win98 allowed some other file formats for
    things when they came up with the active desktop deal.

    Any graphics file you save in Windows Paint will be a bitmap (unless you
    have a later version that will also do jpegs).
