If anyone is interested, I had recently acquired from EBAY a bunch of LCDs
of a unknown type. reference a auction under way now

Although the items were unused and new, there was a very large percentage of
them that had defective spots or splotches that detract from their use from
something other than testing, or experimentation purposes. The defects don't
affect their operation, but it does affect the readability of the digits,
depending on the defects. I do not know if other boxes have these defects or
not.
Anyway they are basically a two digit, with two decimal points, and seven
segments each.
They are a relatively slow LCD in that it takes a bit for the matrix to go
transparent after excitation. They are also very low voltage low power
units, less than a volt seems to activate a segment quite well.
The pinouts is straightforward, pin one is VSS, pin 2 is the first decimal
point, pins 3,4,5 make up the lower half of the first segment, pin 6 is the
next decimal point, 7,8,9 the next lower half of the second digit,
10,11,12,13 the top half of the second digit and 14,15,16,17 the top half of
the first digit. Pin 18 is not used.

Thanks also for your ongoing support of all of us on this
list. You give so very much of your time and knowledge resources - it's
much appreciated. Where do you come up with the time to provide all of
this help? I seem to just keep up with the volume of list e-mail much less
the time for the depth of contribution that you provide on a regular basis!
