3V logic w/ Stamps?

Being that Stamps like a min of 4.5V, is it possible to interface with 3 or
3.3V logic devices by some means other than a level-shifter IC? or a handful
of transistors and resistors? Can anyone tell of mixing chip families to
this end successfully perhaps? I'm attempting to simulate the outputs
(slowly) of a PIC18 at 3.3V with a Stamp before getting into it too deeply..
