Hello all. I just bought my first basic stamp and I'm trying to
program it with a Macintosh PB G3 running Virtual PC 4 and
Windows 2000. I'm not trying to debate Mac vs Windows but
many devices I see in the field that are serial programmable
require custom Windows software. And I carry at least one Mac
with me with VPC and a Keyspan 28X.
When I first recieved my Basic Stamp BS2p24 and the BS2p
Demo board I connected everything as instructed and ran the
Windows version of the BS2 software. The serial cable I'm
using connects the Macs HSKo line to DTR and I can see that
line go active (momentarily) at the ATTN line on the chip when I
try to download or get the chip ID.
Am I doing something fundementally wrong? I have a new Sony
Vaio with Windows 2000 but it doesn't have a serial port. Does
anyone have experience with USB- real RS232 adaptors (with
real DTR and true RS232 signal levels)
Thanks for the help.

port so it works Ok too. Since I have PC's that work I don't use my
Mac for these things. Mac's have generally required all the serial
handshaking lines to be setup (things like DTR, RTS, CTS, et cetera).
Pc's used to, but over the years PC's have become simpler in that
most PC's of today require little or no handshaking as the COM port
hardware and software does it all for you.
I've sort of forgotten these tidbits nowadays, but you can try
http://www.ctips.com/rs232.html for a start.

it under OSX, in which case VPC doesn't support serial ports yet. Or
maybe they do, VPC 5 was released last week.
At least two independent Mac IDEs are in development now *that I know
of* for the Basic Stamp, both of which are carbonized apps, so they'll
run on older versions of the MacOS as well as newer ones.
