newbie with BS1 connection problem

I have tried looking through the archives to find a solution to this,
but haven't come across anything that works.
I have a BS1, with the Stamp activity board. Connected 9V battery,
put in BS1, plugged into parallel port on my laptop. Trying anything,
just 'Debug "hello"'. When I hit Alt-R, I get "Hardware not found"
I saw somewhere that laptops sometimes have problems, so I hooked it
up to my desktop. same problem.
I'm running windows2000, downloaded stamp.exe from parallaxinc.com,
tried the program that came with it, no difference.
I used a voltmeter, the power is going through the voltage regulator,
5VDC into the stamp.
I don't know what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.
