Real Time Clock to the millisecond?

I need to get a real time clock reading with milliseconds.
i.e. hh:mm:ss.mmm

All of the RTC chips seem to only give whole seconds.

Has anyone done this or have any ideas on how it might be done?

Have you considered connecting to a GPS receiver. The GPS signal
includes a time component in the data stream.
