Connecting stamp to cell phone?

Can anybody here give me some info/tips/links for connecting a BS to a cell
phone for the purpose of transferring small amounts of data over a LONG
distance? It seems like the digital cell phones would be quite easy for this
purpose, but I have not found any good information that helps me figure out how
to accomplish this.

ANY information is greatly appreciated.

Send the data as characters via a MAX232 chip connected to a modem on
your cell phone.
