WWVB - atomic clocks

Greetings,

I was wondering if any of you BStamp users who might know of a WWVB
receiver which will deliver RS-232 or TTL output suitable for reading
into the BStamp.

Ultralink, the makers of a WWVB receiver which has a few articles at
Parallax regarding a WWVB receiver which uses RS-232, NO LONGER SELLS
ANY WWVB PRODUCTS! Thus, I cannot obtain one of these.

Any suggestions?

Jah

Jim ... Here is a link to one source for an RS-232 atomic clock which
I've used for two or three years. It's great! Do a search for Sync-Time
    or Arcron-Zeit for other sources.

    Regards,

My application used a different processor ... not the Stamp. A better
approach might be to use Tom Clark's "Totally Accurate Clock". Here's
    a starter link: http://www.setileague.org/hardware/clock.htm

    Nick,

Thanks for the info. I am actually using on of these Acron-Zeit devices
right now. I just don't like the fact that it takes a funky DTR, RTS
for power and mostly that it spits out data at 300 bits/sec. My BS2P
    applications don't do 300 bits/sec and I'm using a small PIC to do a
conversion from 300 bits/sec to 4800 bits /sec. This is a bit ugly and
requires RS-232 drivers. Not a very elegant BStamp solution.

Are you doing it some way better? I would like to know.

    Thanks,

    Jah

I talked to the people a Ultralink about six months ago and they said
they could no longer get the reciever chip they were using and that they
were looking for another manufacturer for the chips. So they might start
making the WWVB again in the future.

Well, all I can offer is a little food for thought.
You could use a WWV receiver, tie in a tone decoder, phaselock loop
    chip, tuned for 1,000 hz.
Feed the output to a pin on the stamp chip. Basically, once a
minute (except for the top of the hour), they fire off a 800
millisecond 1,000 hertz pulse that you could use to sync up to.
I'd probably use a Dallas RTC chip, set it's time and then use WWV to
    keep it in time.
You could use another stamp or a cheaper stamp and then request time
    info from it when you
    want to as well.
The Canadian equivalent to WWV is CHU, they broadcast a regular
    time info binary sequence
using tones for a 300 buad modem. If you get their RF signal OK, you
can use a modem or FSK chip to decode the 300 baud tones and sync up
a Dallas RTC chip, or use the time info directly as desired.
http://www.nrc.ca/inms/inmse.html takes you to the Canadian CHU
version of WWV. They basically send over the air, the same 300 baud
signal they send to you if you were to dial up their data line.
http://www.hobbytron.net/R-HFRC-1.html Hobbytron has a WWV receiver
    kit, but you'll need
to use a PLL or something to convert the 1,000hz signal with.
    http://psn.quake.net/sdrdocs/wwvcorr.htm#Intro has info about the
WWV signals that might help you out.

I hope this helps a little.
    regards,
    Earl

There's a little receiver designed for MSF, the time signals station
in Britian that will work for you. MSF operates on a frequency of 60
khz like WWVB and the receiver output can be decoded by a Stamp. The
output current limit is around 15uA for one version of the receiver
so run it thru a CMOS gate. The only outlet for the MSF EM2 receiver
that I know of is Maplin Electronics in the UK. Be sure and get the
ferrite core antenna that goes with it.
