I don't own a Stamp yet but with your help I will soon. I'm interested
in a single or several linked Stamps to ultimately control an autonomous
robot.

It'll need to be able to control the following type of functions:
1. Control several (non feedback) stepper motor controllers ICs (for
cameras (fixed speed just pan left/right, tilt up/down)),
2. Main drive wheel motor controller (speed (0-xxx RPM), forward/reverse
direction)
3. Analog and Digital I/O (temp readings, misc. sensors, manipulators
open/close, lights on/off, compass readings (0-5vdc), position encoder on
drive wheel, light level, etc.
4. Record data referenced to time and/or position (relative x,y
position, time, sensor readings (temps, light levels), possibly I/O
states)
5. Run control algorithms for vehicle guidance and drive system control
(closed loop system, using compass and RPM count on drive wheels)
6. Possible GPS integration in future
7. I/O sampling rates between 5 and 10Hz for vehicle control and about
1Hz for mission sensors.
8. Mission: Run preprogrammed course for about 12 hours, then download
data via serial line.

Some of the support hardware may include: Compass module, Stepper Motor
Control Circuits (non feedback), PWM Drive Motor Controller, Laptop PC,
serial cable, mission sensors, Pocket Watch Module.

I’ve been reading this newsgroup for a month and there are some truly
dedicated and intelligent contributors. I’ve also checked out several
Stamp websites, all good. Here are some of my initial questions:

- Should I consider the new BS2p40?
- What about a development board?
- Is the Stamp suited for this application? I‘m concerned that this
application may be to demanding for what the Basic stamp was intended
for.
- Should I consider breaking the tasks up into multiple individual stamp
modules. If so, do they “link” well together (use 1 wire or I/O ports?)
- Any reference book recommendations

I’m excited about the possibilities!

Your guidance is greatly appreciated,
Chris Dundorf
