One Final Infrared Question

I have a radio shack infared detector (276-137). I have it powered
to 5v & grounded. I hae a voltmeter connected to the Vout wire. When
there is no IR present, the meter reads 5.0v. When I point a remote
control at the detector and hit a button, the voltage drops to about
3.4x volts. Shouldn't the voltage go low (around 0v) when it is
detecting IR?
the Radio shack manual is terrible and gives no insight into my
problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

then back up to 5V, but your voltmeter is reading the averages. Try
hooking it up to a serial port or read it from a stamp or something.

If you look at the output with a scope you will probably see pulses because
the remote is sending pulses. you are seeing the RMS value I suspect.
hope this is some help.
PS Try using a latch on the output.
