I have a basic stamp2. Can someone please tell me how to correctly
hook up the detector and emmitter to the stamp and the correct code.

When I use stampsinclass.com's directions, the object is always
detected, no matter where I point the emmitter. I have the emitter
and detector side by side. When I unplug the emmitter, the signal
osciallates and it flickers between detected/not_detected. I have no
idea whats wrong!

Thank you!

You need to make sure you don't have fluorescent lights on -- they seem to
trigger alot of I/R detectors. Also, you may need to put a shield around the
LED (emitter) to direct it forward -- otherwise I/R escapes from the sides
and rear and will trigger the sensor if its nearby. Many use a piece of
    shrink tubing over the LED.

FWIW, I use a cut off piece of soda straw glued in place (and possibly
    wrapped with electrical tape).

The last one of these I used before switching to the Sharp modules was an
aluminum block drilled to hold the LED and a small brass tube to further
reduce the side scatter. I was using one of the Panasonic sensors and fitted
it to the same aluminum block so that it looked out through a 1/16" vertical
slot. I had a good 15-18" range with a very narrow field of view -- at 12"
the field was about 2-3 inches wide.

Keep in mind some things pass I/R even though visible light will not
penetrate. Black antistatic foam is very good for blocking / absorbing
I/R -- would make a good sumo robot skin too...
