Metal Detector that works with stamp

I am trying to build a mine detecting robot. To do this i want to
combine a metal detector and a walker robot. But, i need a metal
detector that i could connect to a basic stamp II so that the robot
will know when metal is detected.

If anyone has any idea what type of metal detector to build or has any
experience with this please help!!!

Got to Radio Shaft and buy one, and use the signal it produces.. . .

Do you want to detect Ferrous or non-Ferrous metals or both?

I am working on a similar project, and we are going to build a metal detector
    ourselves. The design isn't that
complicated: just two coils of wire and a changing field in one will induce a
changing field in the other. soil
will have one effect, whereas metal will attenuate the signal differently and
induce a different changing field in
    the receive coil.

Of course, if you want it to work right the first time, and keep working for a
while... I'd go ahead and buy one.
If it has a LED output, it'd be easy to hack that into a stamp input.

If anyone knows of some information on subsurface radar (a metal detector is a
    simple version) or scratchbuilt
metal detectors, I'd love your input.
