Using a stamp to control a metal detector

Im a beginner in both electronics and stamps, but i need to do a
project for school.
My project consists of a spider type walking robot that will be able
to detect metal. The problem isn't building tho robot or the metal
detector, its getting them to work together.
Please if anyone knows which type of detector will be best for this
project tell me. Also, i need to know how to connect the detector to a
basic stamp II so that the robot will "know" when it is walking over
metal.
Any help will b appreciated!

As I recall, the Robot Store sells a small metal detector suitable for
a stamp.
