Driving A Selonoid

Can anyone help me with project I am doing driving some hyd. solonoids with a
stamp.
The sol. operate at 12-14v dc.
the coil resistance is 7 ohm.
I would like to do it with trans.

I think I want to use a 2n2222 to drive a PNP

Thanks in advance.

also call directly @ 888-920-7746
ask for shannon

The solenoid you are driving takes about 2 amps of current. Suggest you use
a relay and a driver transistor controlled by the stamp. This will also
isolate the transient voltages developed from the solenoid when you stop the
current flow through the coil. The relay contacts should be rated to carry 5
    amps.
    Hope this helps, Steve

The device you recommend will theoretically satisfy the requirement. However
there are other factors to consider. The IPS511G requires a PCB to mount
this SOIC device. The Switched output of this device is not totally isolated
from the input to the device. From their document, "The double level shifter
allows large offsets between the logic ground and the load ground." There
is still voltage present at the output even when the device is turned off.
This problem does not exist with a relay. It gives complete circuit
isolation between the driving source and the load.

Take a look at the IPS021 - about $1.50 at digikey. Fully protected
against overcurrent and built in transient absorption. Driving a
relay has all the same problems as driving a solenoid, except the
current is lower, so why add that into the mix unless you're really
    concerned about the isolation?

You would be better off using a relay . 14v /7ohms = 2 amps You will need
a much larger trans. and dont forget about the breakdown voltage from the
solinoid coil after it is swiched off. A relay negates all that. But you
may still need to put a cap. across the solinoid leads to eliminate any
    noise from it .

If total isolation is required, then an opto coupler might be a
consideration. Look on digi-key.com and search for high or low side
drivers. I would be happy to design and build a circuit to your
specifications, but I couldn't do it for free. There are other driver
units available at digi-key.com that don't require a circuit board.

I would recommend you consider a device such as:

    http://www.irf.com/product-info/datasheets/data/ips511g.pdf

    Available from Digi-Key

    Part #:

    IPS511GTR-ND

    Price: $1.33
