Barking Dog

I have a dog next door that loves to wake me up all hours of the night
and day. I have considered hooking up a stamp to a microphone that I
could sense the bark and when it hears one bark, would give one bark
back to the mutt through a speaker. Two barks would get two barks and
so on. Anyone have any idea how effective this might be? The reply of
the bark would be from a real mean sounding hound.

I think you're asking for trouble!!! Not only might the real dog bark even more
(dog barking is not like humans
yelling at each other; it's more a case of puppy-like excitement), but you would
be in trouble with your neighbors
in any event. And how is this going to help you sleep?

I would use the Stamp to trigger a video camera and track the dog over the
fence. A few I/R LED's should provide night vision.

You could use the Stamp to trigger a sprinkler that just happened to be
    aimed over the fence.

Otherwise I would make a remote-controlled noisemaker and put it in the
bushes below the dog neighbor's bedroom window. Dog barks, you press button,
    horn honks under their window.

Hi Leroy, Suggest you use high energy and high frequency ultrasound directed
at the offending animal. Maybe while he is in your neighbors house. FYI,

High frequency ultrasound adversely affects the inner ears of a human
subpopulation, in addition to dogs, so your point is well taken.

Perhaps detect the bark and spit out a high-freq, high-amplitude signal
that you wouldn't hear but would bug the dog...

I tried the high Frequency signal thing with no luck. How high does the
amplitude have to be? Is 40 watts enough? I would expect somewhere
around 20 kHz to 35 kHz? Would the stamp be able to generate that high
a signal? Frequency wise I mean?

I am wondering if I could make a water canon that would listen for the
bark and shoot water at it's source? That would be a neat control
    application.

ps I have spoke to the neighbor about this several times, called the
police and pissed them off even more. Apparently there is no civil code
where I live that is being broken. Only my wife and my piece of mind.

I don't know if your neighbors are interested in helping to solve your
problem, but if they are, there is a gadget that is placed on the dogs
collar. Every time the dog barks, the device emits a spray of citronella.
Dogs hate this smell. The dog learns quickly not to bark. This is the only
solution that our vet had for our dog. I know this is not a very
interesting solution using a basic stamp, but it may work.

I believe that the dog has detected a burglar or prowler.

Call the police every time you hear the dog bark after 10:00 or 12:00 and
report those suspicious goings on at your neighbor's house. There may not be
a barking dog ordinance but how can the police fail to knock on their door
in the middle of the night to check it out; especially after a concerned
citizen did the neighborly thing and helped them look out for their safety
    and personal property.

This would probably have some effect, but not the result you want.
Ever hear one dog in the neighborhood bark, even just once and
before you know it there is a major event going on in the area and
every dog has his part to say?

    I wouldn't try this.

P.S. My tater cannon is ver effective. . .

Keep the horn on your side of the fence. . . We don't want
