Train the cat to puuuuurrrrrrr at the door entrance, and use a senstive
microphone and (Stamp-based) matched filter to detect it. That would
exclude other similar-sized critters.

I just recalled that in radio control car racing, they use small counters to
detect each lap of the car. They use a tiny transmitter that they place on
each car. They must have good range, I have seen them used on outdoor dirt
tracks, and the building is about 10 feet away from far side of the track. I
never saw one, but I presume they are small and lightweight as the racers
are always so competitive about weight in small car racing. I dont know how
long the battery in them lasts either.
I would presume a radio control hobby shop would sell them.

Search on Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors. If I recall, battery-
less devices which can resonate and respond to a querying radio
signal. I think that's what's in my office's door access cards (not
bar codes or magnetic strips).
