That's what I used to think to... until I found Automationdirect.com
Absolute Encoders - $220
-- 5 bit to 10 bit gray code models
-- stainless steel shaft
-- open collector NPN or PNP models
Incremental Encoders - $66 to $218
-- hollow or solid shaft models
-- operating voltage 5-30 VDC
-- quadrature-style incremental sensing, 100 to 2,500 PPR
They also sell some couplings.
Not assocated with Automation Direct, just a satisfied customer.
