Pins change state when Com port opens !!

I am noticing that if I have a pin on the Stamp set high, and then I
open the com port (in VB), the pin will immediately go low and stay
there. Any ideas?

Also, when a pin is set to high, is there a way to stop
the "momentary" change of state as the Stamp processor does some type
of cycling. Even though this toggling of state is only for a very
short interval, it is going to cause havoc with the app I am
developing.
