Stamp To PC Serial Communications

As a beginner Stamper, I have been progressing thru connecting LED's
and getting them to work. Next connected a LCD and got that working.
Connected a PCjr serial printer and got that working. Next connected a
PCjr infra-red keyboard and got that working. I could send characters
from the keyboard to the LCD or to the printer. Using combination of
keys I can turn LED's on/off. Next connected to a DOS PC and was able
to send/receive data (able to go from Stamp keyboard to PC display).
Now (finally) for my question, I am currently using 2 Stamp pins, one
for xmit and one for receive (thru a 22K resistor). Can I connect the
xmit and receive leads from the PC to just one Stamp pin? What kind of
problems would I encounter? Would I wipe out the Stamp pin? In time I
plan to do a simple protocol to try and prevent both from trying to
xmit at the same time. By the way, if anyone has a PCjr in the closet
gathering dust, it is easy to get the keycodes off the infra-red
receiver(it is a plug-in module on the PCjr). The only bad part is
that it requires +12 & +5 volts, but you get a wireless keyboard. I
have learned alot from this newsgroup.
