Tracked robot kit?

It may be slightly off topic, but I think this is one of the best groups
to ask:
I am building a small autonomous robot to search a 10ft by 10ft grid for
a 1 inch metal slug, buried two inches underground. This is a scale
model for a larger robot which will search a 100 ft by 100 ft area for
buried 55 gal drums containing toxic waste.
The terrain will be grass (variously 3-12 inches), sand, mud, swamp,
with trees and other obstacles interspersed. Are there any commercially
available robot kits (ie, chassis, motors, and tracks or legs or wheels)
that can handle this type of environment?
I've looked around, but all I can find is "carpet rover" type kits. If
possible, I'd rather not have to scratchbuild...
Thanks,
John

Hi John -
Here is a link to a bulldozer kit which may be hackable for your purposes.
From Mondotronics (The Robot Store):
http://www.robotstore.com/catalog/display.asp?pid=73
Hope that gets you started or gives you some ideas.
For the larger system you might consider one of the Invalid Wheelchairs
which they use on the beach. They have low pressure tires and are suitable
for environments with sand and/or water. I will try to locate a web site
with a picture and/or description for you.

Bruce Bates
cut it and flip it over inside out. You then get a rubber track with teeth
for traction. Simple pulleys or rollers for the belt to run on will give you
the drive and idler pulley you need. For full scale work I cannot help. Have
you looked into those track driven snowblowers they sell? Maybe you could
pick up a used one and modify it. This is what I plan to do someday.
Good luck
-Kerry
