Smarthome, JC Whitney and even Heartland have car in driveway detectors.
The Heartland unit is $90, probably less than what you would spend with a
STAMP/detector/TX/RX/Weatherproof enclosure project. It uses PIR.

    Hi,

I have used X10 motion sensors before with success in this manner.
You can mount a sensor on a pole outside and it transmits to a receiver in
the house. One advantage to this is you don't need wires, you can have it
trigger a light or bell to warn you someone has entered your drive. Although
this is not necessarily Stamp related, you can incorporate the Stamp using
the X10 commands if you wish.

Here is a link to the unit I used:

    Hope this helps.

Ultrasonic will be of little practical use outdoors unless you want to
reconstruct the kind of filtering that makes Doppler radar work. A
photoelectric emitter/detector pair with optics is the most standard method
used by packaged solution vendors. PIR can do the job well, x10's sensors
included, although a sensitivity adjustment would be helpful if you want to
trigger only on objects as big as a motor vehicle. Outdoor lighting fixtures
with integrated PIR motion sensors are probably the lowest cost way to do
this if you only need one or two, just realize that you'll need to hack into
the output relay to provide your signal. There are also some inexpensive PIR
sensing components available and sample circuits at various web sites to
accomplish this. You'll still need to fab your own PCB and assemble and
solder from scratch. Is this what you are looking for?
