Sensing hand presence

I am working on a project where a sensor senses the present of a
hand when gets withing 1/2" of its surface and have that signal
detected by a stamp. I know that there are some capacitive solution
to that but not sure how. Any ideas?

Try http://www.qprox.com/. I have their e11x demo board which I think
was around $15 and does exactly that, sends out +5v if you get within
about .5 inches of the sensing area. You can extend the sensing area
by attaching a wire to the board and running it wherever you want the
sensor to be active. Relatively cheap and easy to use. And If I can
get something to work, then believe me, it's easy to use... ;)
If you want the IC without the fancy board it should be under $2
each. Here's a link to the IC I think you could use >

An alternate solution would be an infrared emitter/detector pair
available at Radio Shack. There was an article in last year's
October issue of Nuts & Volts demonstrating this.
