Using MAX232 to interface keyboard

I am trying to interface a CueCat as cheaply as I can to a Stamp.
Would it work to use a MAX232 to correct voltage TTL and then use the
SERIN command?

Here is a quick paragraph on CueCat from one of the hits...
http://www.beau.lib.la.us/~jmorris/linux/cuecat/
"The CueCat® is a barcode scanner being passed out for free at various
places along with a Windows9x® driver/package called CRQ. In it's intended
use the pair is probably one of the most blatent privacy violations ever
committed against a clueless populace, but once you strip away the unique
serial number and the lame attempt to obfuscate the output it is a fairly
good general purpose barcode scanner. This website is mostly devoted to
these unintended uses of the hardware."

PAK-VI to talk to the CueCat, but I personally haven't tried it.

and CueCat codes from products and publications and go to their websites
automatically.
It was an ill-conceived idea that flopped big-time. Several companies sunk
tons of money into the idea and lost it all.
There is all sorts of info on hacking the CueCat on the web.

Serial converter, but the voltage levels would work on the PC because it can
figure it out, and mentioned if that it required the strict levels that RS232
uses, then use a MAX232 and I'm wondering if I did do that, converted it to
serial, would the SERIN command work for that?
