Hybrid power generation

I'm considering building a hybrid power system for use in large scale
model vehicles. Duty cycle is intermittent, so small gas engine and
generator with appropiately sized storage battery and electric motors
will work.
Don't know much about controlling these beasts, though I suspect my
BS2 can come in handy! I expect that I need to monitor battery charge
level, and control engine throttle to maintain appropriate generator
output.
Can anyone point me towards info on the subject?
