If I understand you, why not use a PS/2 keyboard and a PAK-VI. Works great
and you get 100+ buttons out of it. http://www.al-williams.com/awce/pak6.htm

By happenstance, the project of the month this month shows how to use the
PAK-VI to read a mouse.
