bs2 and Mitel 3270 DTMF decoder Shiftin problem

I've discovered the Mitel 3270 series of dtmf decoders. This great
little 8-pin IC decodes all 16 dtmf tones and shifts them out to the
BS2 using SHIFTIN. I'm having a problem with the IC, it always shows
1's for the msb, regardless of what the tone binary sequence is (or
should be). I'm geting a nib-sized var and using shiftin(pin),3,[noparse][[/noparse]var}
for an instruction. Any suggestions or code snippets?
