Interfacing the LCD with the RTC and DTS Chips (from the Stampworks experiments)

Hi all,
Now that I was successful putting time on the LCD, I went ahead and
tried to put a DS1620 and DS1302 together to add the output of
temperature to the LCD. I know this is close to the challenge problem
of Experiment #30. I notice that according to the diagram, it is OK
to share the lines coming out of P0 and P1 to both chips. However, I
tried to share P0 to both chips and noticed a different in output to
both the LCD and Debug screen from the code I used to output only the
time to the displays. I know I can hook up some unused open I/O ports
separately
to the Digital temperature sensor (DTS). Is there anyway I can
actually share the lines such as P0 and P1? If so what is the right
way? Ant input will be appreciated. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
RP
