Found my way out of Hardware Not Found Hell

I had a LOT of trouble communicating with the BS2sx. Constant error
msgs. I finally accidently managed to communicate with it.

I accidently discovered there are some unwritten rules with my computer,
serial port, Stamp and
cable.

RULES:
1. Apply power to the Stamp well in advance of booting up

2. Boot up WIN98 and go to the editor and it will communicate

If you break the power connection to the BS2sx and reconnect power the
editor will not recognize it.

If you maintain power to the Stamp and reboot the editor will not
recognize it.

fussy little critter isn't it? May have something to do with
initializing the serial port on boot up and setting up something with
the Stamp. Go figure.

When I initially received the replacement OEM module, I measured the
current draw upon power up. A DMM had been giving fruity readings so I
switched to an analog meter. It would swing up to about .080A and then
gradually settle down to .050A. For some bizzare reason it no longer
seems to do this.

It now swings up to the .050A range and seems to pulse (small flicks of
the needle to a higher reading).

Anyone else discover this quirk????

OOPS wrong range of readings. It initially draws about .025A and
flicks up to .033A. It then settles down to .009A flickering up to
    .015A.

Of course naturally the editor tells me it found a BS2p1.-IC. I hope
Parallax put in the right chip and firmware.

Check to make sure, either in your computer BIOS or in windows 98, that you
have the power saving features on your motherboard disabled. This is why
you need to power the BS2 up before you boot your computer and why it won't
recognize it again after either the power to the BS2 is dropped or the app
using the serial port is closed.

With the BS2 turned on and connected while your computer boots up, the
serial port doesn't goto sleep, because it can sense the BS2 (not the
hardware itself, just its current draw). Once the serial port thinks you
are done with it (ie turn the BS2 off, or close the program), it puts the
port to sleep to conserve power. I think the BS editor doesn't know how to
properly wake up the serial port.

I had a beast of a time with my external modem until I disabled all the
crappy power saving stuff in BIOS. The power saving system goes under a few
names, the most recent is ACPI (I believe it stands for Advanced Computer
Power Interface). This is also the same system that lets you put your
computer into "suspend" mode, so if you like that kind of stuff, you'll lose
it when your disable the power saving features of your computer.

This is just a theory based on my experience with a different serial device,
I hope this will help you guys out.

I've seen this problem when I run my laptop, which is normally networked,
without the network card and a network connection. If I disable NAV it seems
    to help.

    Hi Robert,

I want to thank you so much for saving my hair. I was tearing it out
clump by clump trying to get the sx to function.

I had thought that I had turned off all power management options in both
WIN98 and the Award CMOS bios in this 350Mhz P3.

Although all power management was disabled and NO. I found this one
obscure setting "PM Control by APM". I set it to NO thinking it
shouldn't have any effect as all other settings had been killed off long
    ago.

Surprise! Surprise! It had a profound effect. Now, like the donkey in
SHREK, I can't get it to shut up. I tried for over an hour to trip up
the communications between the P3 and the sx. No way!!

The sx is now a MORE reliable communicator than the BS1.

Send me your address Robert and I'll shoot you a free 555 kit.

Thanks again to all! This is a great users group with considerable big
gun talent blowing away the problems.

New Windows editor V1.2 has resolved all communication issues with my
BS2sx. It properly identifies itself and there are no problems
downloading or saving programs. It finds the correct com port on an
auto setting. I couldn't get it to fail on this PIII-450 with all Win98
and CMOS power management turned off.

    Great work Parallax!!
