Error - Hardware Not Found

I have just purchase a Basic Stamp version D and am having problems
connecting to it. I have read all of the previous posted messages
related to this same error but no one seems to have a direct answer.
I am using the cable that came with the kit and have check the
voltage on the 9v battery. I am also running in dos, (restarting my
computer in dos mode from windows 98). I have tried the stamp on my
laptop, my pc and my daughters pc and have had no luck in connecting.
I am connected to the paallel port and have tried several different
settings.
Any help would be much appreciated.
