wireless(RF) keyboard encoding?

Hi,
A while ago I emailed with a question about doing wireless keyboard
encoding. I got some good suggestions back about using IR. However,
for what I'm doing (building giant chicken wings to control a version
of Joust, believe it or not) I need to use RF (I'm not going to have
a clean line of sight to the controller). Does anyone have any advice
on the easiest way to do this? I want to send the information from
two different (analog ball in cage) switches on each wing, 8 switches
total, to one keyboard encoder. I noticed that parallax has some new
RF transmitters receivers, does it makes sense to try and use those?
I've also looked at a couple of units at www.rentron.com.
Any advice or two cent donations gratefully accepted
