MAX712 problems

Has anyone out there had any experience with the MAX712 NiMH battery
charger? I amn having some troubles with it. Basically what will happen
is, about 40 min after being turn on with a dead battery, it will end fast
charge mode. I am charging a ~1200 mAH NiMH battery at ~525mA, so obviously
this is not enough. Then when I reset the charger (turn it off and on) it
runs in fastcharge for about 20 minutes. The next time I do this it charges
for about 70 minutes or so and bring the pack to it's proper (I think)
charge. Once this whole cycle is done, the battery will run my ~550mA MP3
player for 110 minutes. This sounds about right seeing as how typical
1200mAH rating of NiMH batteries is most likely a 20Hr rate, and this is a
battery bought from a surplus store.
I am using the typical operating circuit on the front of the datasheet, It
is running from the 12v side of a PC power supply and is all assembled on
breadboard.
