OK, out of nowhere, everytime I try to load a code onto my BS2, I get
an error message saying "Basic Stamp II detected but not responding
on COM1." I've tried it on 3 computers, same thing. PLEASE HELP!!
Graduation project due on Friday!!!

Thanks,
-J

I would try a known working stamp in the circuit ........if same
results............ you have isolated the problem to the module and it
    will need to be replaced.

This may sound terribly simple, but have you tried
    a fresh battery?

Aye. I can't offer much, but to say that this was the message I was
receiving with the first stamp I had. It was defective, and everything
worked once it was replaced. Hope you can get this worked out!

    Hi,
This problem brings up an issue that seems to me to be
neglected concerning stamps. Static. And it's capacity to
damage chips, and the means to prevent that damage. I never
touch my chips unless I am wearing my grounding strap. Am I
    being over-cautious?

First move should be to undo whatever you did last before the Stamp quit
    responding.

Could be that whatever else you have connected is pulling the voltage down,
keeping the stamp from firing up. Check Vin with a DC voltmeter -- it should
be at least 6-7 volts. Check Vdd -- it should be about 4.9-5.1 volts. If Vin
is OK and Vdd is low, something is loading down the regulator on the Stamp.

    Hi Ken,

Not a bit. I have a friend who 'blew' a batch of 20 ICs, as he went by the
rule that 'with all this humid air you sure can't have any static on you'.
So, always use a grounding strap, or if not, grab the chips by the edge,
    don't touch the pins.

    All the best,

    Mike

Here are some ideas that might help:

    1) Are you feeding the Stamp +5V or unregulated voltage via the Vin pin? If
you are using Vin, check to see that the Stamp is generating 5V. If not, you
may have blown the regulator. Try feeding it 5V directly to the 5V pin and
    leave Vin disconnected.

    2) Measure the voltages on the SIN and SOUT pins to see if they look
reasonable. Remember that the Stamp "feeds back" the negative voltage from
the PC back to the PC. This will quickly show you if you have a bad cable.

    3) Have you tried a different cable?

    4) Did the Stamp ever work? If not, be sure to check for things holding COM1
open (like palm pilot software or a modem) or things holding COM3 open (most
PCs can't use COM1/3 at the same time).

    5) Set the Windows software to explicitly use COM1 (you are sure it is COM1)
and set it for the exact Stamp type you have (BS2, BS2SX, etc). This reduces
    some variables.

    6) Does your cable or programming board have a short between pins 6 and 7 of
the DB9? (Check this on the PC end with an ohm meter).

    7) Make sure ATN is connected (again with an ohm meter).

    8) FedEx :-)

    Good Luck!
