I've used modules from www.maxstream.net for direct serial connection,
although they are a bit expensive ($150 each). As you've no doubt become
aware, most of the lower cost units require that a Manchester (or other
guaranteed time-variant) code be used. www.qwikradio.com has some
inexpensive 8-pin IC transmitters and receivers; however note that these do
fall into the latter category.
