RangeFinding

I've been thinking of using a rangefinder in an automotive application. At
highway speeds, would wind noise interfere with ultrasonic rangefinding? If so,
are there any inexpensive (sub $500) laser rangefinders that either have a
serial connection or that can be hacked to output data? My searches have only
dug up $3,000+ units with data output capability and $200-$500 units that are
for golf/hunting that look like binoculars and display their data in the
eyepiece.

I want to build an auto-fallback cruise control. Run at requested speed unless
a car is detected in front, then maintain a certain distance based on speed.
(user selectable 20-50 feet per 10 mph)
