suggestion/question?

Just a suggestion for all. When you reply to a message, would it be
better to keep the quoted
text brief, or full, 1 level, 2level, or more????
i have noticed that when people have been replying
to messages, they quote, and some of the replies, are quite large, and
have gone back as far as 4 or 5 levels. This does take up a lot of
space/time to dl
on the net.
Thanks

ps; I am not blasting anyone, just making an observation, and asking the
groups opinion.

for me to follow a thread. It would be nice if Parallax supported
(sponsored) this group on their website.
Ultimate BBS simply blows this away.
This is simply my observation. It is not my intention to belittle the
efforts of anyone. No offense intended.

1) If you go to groups.yahoo.com and log into the basicstamps group, you can
click on the Messages button. Once there, select Thread in the upper right
corner and you can view by thread.
2) Your mail client may have this feature also. In outlook 2000, for
example, you can use "grouping" to do this. Look in the help for more
details. If you do it right, You wind up with a little pane that lets you
drag a column header to group by that column. Grouping by subject lets you
do it.

Quoting should be confined to the section of the message that is being replied
to - there's no point in repeating the whole message(s) just to respond to
something half-way through the text.

I typically find that replying above quoted text is
usually the best choice. That way someone who has been
following the discussion can get right to the newest
message, and others can see what went before. There
are times when new text interspersed with old is
useful, such as to answer questions presented as a
list.
As to the larger questions about sponsorship and about
mailing list versus discussion board, just some
thoughts:
On a sponsored mailing list, a fellow user's PC
autoreplied to a few messages received from the list
and, because he had not configured it to autoreply
once per sender, subsequently replied to posts created
by its own replies. An aggregator of special-interest
mailing lists is better at addressing such technical
problems. I do dislike that replies sometimes appear
in my Yahoo! inbox long before the original post.
UltimateBB and similar systems can be used
effectively; but where there are few users or too
narrow a topic, the boards languish. Bulletin boards
are good for large user populations with differing
interests within a topic. Mailing lists better for
smaller groups of users with a more focused topic. I
may never care to read a bulletin board thread on
what's going on in Kansas with fellow members of
special interest group x, whereas I may read a post
tomorrow on integrating some chip and then, a month
later, find a need for it.
